MARIACHI MUSIC AND FIREWORKS LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR THE 23rd ANNUAL MARIACHI USA FESTIVAL FEATURING THE BEST MARIACHI GROUPS IN THE U.S AND MEXICO

LOS ANGELES (June 06, 2012) – On Saturday, June 23, 2012, the 23rd Annual MARIACHI USA Festival, the premier mariachi music festival in the United States, will once again rock the Hollywood Bowl stage. Featuring five of the top mariachi groups from the United States and Mexico, the MARIACHI USA Festival has thrilled audiences, young and old, and elevated the musical art form to a new level of entertainment. The Festival was founded and created by artist/producer, Rodri J. Rodriguez, as a way for generations to share in the musical tradition full of rich color and the sounds of beautifully crafted music.

“Celebrating 23 years at the Hollywood Bowl is simply amazing and more amazing is the audience demographic that gets younger every year confirming that Mariachi music is not a fad and will live on endlessly!,” commented Rodri J. Rodriguez. “For 22 years, we have brought the best of mariachi to this venue and June 23rd is no exception. It is a family tradition to attend MARIACHI USA by all lovers of this music genre. Mariachi music is a fundamental part of Mexican heritage and the music creates an atmosphere that is passionately powerful.”

The MARIACHI USA Festival was created in 1990 to celebrate the rich mariachi music tradition that many Mexicans take pride in and non Mexicans embrace as the happy music of the world. The nostalgia and history that explodes with each note of mariachi music brings delight and pride to many Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the United States. Today, it is enjoyed across the world and by countless ethnicities.

This year’s Festival features a line-up of outstanding Mariachi groups Fans will enjoy an exciting 4 ½ hour performance featuring the all female Mariachi group, Mariachi Mujer 2000 from California. Joining them include: America’s leading group, Mariachi Sol de Mexico® de Jose Hernandez, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan from Jalisco, Guadalajara; the popular Mariachi Los Toros and Mariachi Estrella de Jalisco from Los Angeles. Joining Mariachi Los Toros for a fifteeen minute performance is two time Grammy winner Michael Salgado. Also performing are MARIACHI USA Allstarz Rhonda Garcia and new AllStarz members Marcos Zarate and Jenny Ibarra along with the 20 member Mi Tierra Ballet Folklorico. Topping off this action packed lineup is a spectacular fireworks finale that accompanies the traditional sing along of 17,000 fans singing to El Rey, Volver Volver and La Negra.

Making history this year is the addition of Laura Sobrino as the first female conductor of the Fireworks Finale of the Festival. Sobrino is one of the first women mariachi performers in the United States. Her trailblazing role as a female mariachi musician spans over 35 years. She was the first female to perform with several virtuoso all-male mariachi groups, including Mariachi Los
Galleros (‘79), and Mariachi Sol de Mexico (‘86). Ms. Sobrino was one of the Hispanic women honorees hand-selected by First Lady Maria Shriver for the "Latinas: The Spirit of California" exhibit at the CA Museum for History, Women & The Arts (‘05). Ms. Sobrino was the original musical director for the all-female mariachi show group Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles (‘94). In 2000, Laura became the musical director and performing violinist with the Mariachi Mujer 2000. In addition to mariachi music performance, Ms. Sobrino has devoted many years to mariachi education. Sobrino was identified as an NEA Master Teacher by the state of Kansas, and has taught at the majority of the national mariachi workshops, including Tucson, Las Cruces, San Jose, Denver, Fresno, Albuquerque and Kansas City. Currently, Sobrino is a music lecturer at UC Riverside (’06, mariachi ensemble) and has published with Mel Bay Publishing, Inc., Southern Music Co, and her own Mariachi Publishing Company (1995).
