      Calder: Nonspace

Hauser & Wirth is proud to present the gallery’s first exhibition in LA for world-renowned artist Alexander Calder. Following the landmark Somerset exhibition ‘From the Stony River to the Sky,’ the presentation in LA will focus on a radically different facet of the artist’s work with a two-part exhibition of primarily monochromatic, abstract sculptures that simultaneously fill space and coexist with it. Utilizing the gallery’s public spaces, ‘Calder: Nonspace’ will feature five large-scale outdoor sculptures, turning the industrial landscape of the Arts District into an oasis of Calder’s monumental works. The outdoor display will be complemented by an indoor survey of mobiles, stabiles, and standing mobiles that sculpt volumes out of voids in an environment designed by Stephanie Goto.

Calder, one of the most influential and pioneering artists of the twentieth century, transformed the very nature of sculpture with his invention of the mobile, which introduced the fourth dimension of time and the actuality of real-time experience into his work. Known primarily for his invention of the mobile, Calder created a prolific oeuvre that extended to wire sculpture, carved figures, stabiles, standing mobiles, oil paintings, works on paper, jewelry, furniture and domestic objects, and monumental public commissions across the globe. This exhibition marks the first solo show in LA for the artist since the landmark 2013 LACMA exhibition ‘Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic.’
