      Fundraising Performance of OTHELLO

The Inner City Shakespeare Ensemble (ICSE), the featured performance troupe of Inner City Performing Arts Inc., presents OTHELLO, William Shakespeare's tragic play in a fundraising event at the Nate Holden Center for Performing Arts on the evening of September 15, 2016. The Ensemble's production of OTHELLO was directed by ICSE's founder, Dr. Melanie Andrews, whose theatrical work with young people in South Los Angeles has launched careers of actors and choreographers presently working on Broadway. Andrews has engaged more than 400 multi-ethnic youth in masterful performances of Shakespeare's plays from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelth Night to Taming of the Shrew and Romeo Juliet. The Company has also writtem and produced plays and videos on current issues like human rights, racial harmony, HIV prevention, and science and technology. The young actors in the Inner City Shakespeare Ensemble have been mentored by members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) like Helen Mirren and most recently by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences like Charles Malik Whitfield, best known for his role as James Mooney on the television series The Guardian. Whitfield mentored Juvanie Hildreth who portrays Otehllo in the September 15th production at the Nate Holden. Medieval fight specialist, Jeffrey Pierce from Game of Thrones, taught the cast sword fighting for OTHELLO. The BBC's Peter Bowes spotlghted the Ensemble's production of OTHELLO in April 2016 on the BBC, in a segment entitled, "After school programme brings Shakespeare to Compton". ICSE's OTHELLO stars Juvanie Hildreth, a member of ICSE since he was 14, in his first major role as Othello; Sonya Kreuger, the youngest member of the cast as Desdemona; Saint-Lozon Ranson as the complex Iago; Mia K. Wlliams as Emelia; Brandon Rachal as Cassio; Dylan Share as Roderigo; Cassandra Carl as Bianca; seasoned actors, Jerome St Jerome as Brabantio/Lodivico and Maisha Hazzard as the Duke turned Duchess. The Inner City Shakespeare Project was founded in 2011. This innovative and unique program brought together students from George Washington High School under the Artistic Direction and tutelage of Dr. Melanie Andrews, Producers Paul Heller and Katy Haber and mentors from the British theater community and industry professionals. In  collaboration with LA County Parks and Recreation and Bafta LA. The groundbreaking journey of this unusual group of players was documented in Mel Stuart’s “SHAKESPEARE IN WATTS”, highlighting an engaging cast of students, teachers and mentors as they worked together to learn the language of the Bard, to create an exciting and moving production.
