LA Machine Learning: Graphical Models (Part 1)

This class marks the start of the second part of the class. We move away from algorithms and concentrated on modeling our problems. This class we will be exploring graphical models. Graphical models are a kind of schema to representing your data that is a bit more sophisticated.

We will start by introducing Bayesian networks. We will do this in the context of the spam classification problem we discussed three weeks ago. We will then generalize to Markov networks which are very good when we don't have a good causal story for our data. We unify the two networks into a common language called Factor graphs.

We finally show why these networks are useful as we represent linear regression, logistic regression, and clustering as really graphical models. We then conclude by modeling topics in text documents and modeling how well we expect a user to be at a game.

The focus of this class is to get comfortable with the new level of abstraction, which we will then use to solve all these problems next week.
