      LA Phil: Turangalîla Symphony

When asked about the meaning behind his wildly expressive Turangalîla Symphony, French composer Olivier Messiaen is said to have replied, "It's a love song." This large-scale sonic masterpiece premiered in 1949, conducted by a young Leonard Bernstein, and is rarely performed today -- all the better for Maestra Susanna Mälkki and the Los Angeles Philharmonic to work their magic on this epic work, which includes a part for the seldom-used theremin-like instrument, the ondes martenot. Also on tap for this concert at Walt Disney Hall in downtown L.A. is the US premiere of Kaija Saariaho's Trans for harp and orchestra, with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet as guest soloist.
