LA Phil: William Grant Still & the Harlem Renaissance
The world premiere of an LA Phil commission honoring William Grant Still, famously known as "the dean of African-American composers," and a performance of works by Ellington, Gershwin and Still's own Symphony No. 4, "Autochthonous," bring jazz and classical together at Walt Disney Hall. A major musical figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Still himself conducted one of his own works with the Los Angeles Philharmonic back in the '30s. Now Thomas Wilkins takes the baton for this Downtown LA concert, which includes the debut of Adolphus Hailstork's aptly named tribute piece, Still Holding On.
