The Last Bookstore welcomes author Dr. Gregory Cumming for the Los Angeles launch event for his new book The Symbionese Liberation Army and Patricia Hearst, Queen of the Revolution. The event takes place on the 45th anniversary of the notorious shootout between the LAPD and FBI with the SLA in South Los Angeles on May 17, 1974, which ended in a fiery inferno that left six members of the SLA dead while Patty Hearst watched it unfold on TV from a hotel near Disneyland. Based on new investigative reporting, the book reveals evidence that heiress Patty Hearst participated in her own kidnapping.

The Symbionese Liberation Army and Patricia Hearst, Queen of the Revolution is an in-depth exploration of Patty Hearst’s kidnapping and her role in the rise and fall of SLA, a left-wing terrorist group that formed in the waning days of San Francisco Bay Area’s counterculture revolution. The SLA alienated the protest movement with its assassination of Oakland school superintendent Marcus Foster 1973 and shocked the nation with the kidnapping of heiress and U.C. Berkeley student Patty Hearst in 1974, whose radical transformation into the urban guerrilla Tania was breathlessly covered by the media.

Dr. Gregory Cumming holds a PhD (2010) in history from the University of California, Riverside. He has worked as an archivist at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the Richard Nixon Library as the Director of Archives Programs. He also serves as a Senior Adjunct Professor at the University of LaVerne where he has created new upper division courses on the Sixties, the Vietnam War, Reagan and the Eighties.
