Note: Your regular ticket includes - and is the same price as - the book.  (See below for Special Book Club Option.) The Last Bookstore is please to present, all the way from France, one of the brightest rising stars of French bande dessinée -  Alexandre Clérisse! Join us to learn more about his new graphic masterpiece, Atomic Empire, and about just what makes French graphic novels so special.   An astonishing and captivating original graphic novel by Thierry Smolderen and Alexandre Clérisse. Inspired by a real psychological case, Atomic Empire is both a psychiatric enigma and a space opera. 1953: The world has entered the age of the Atom, but one man wonders what it means for civilization. His name is Paul—a sci-fi writer who, since childhood, has been in telepathic contact with a hero from the distant future. But when a well-known Pentagon consultant begins to take an interest in him, ”the man who communicates with the future” will commit an unforgivable sin and break an oath to his friend Zarth Arn, hero of the Galactic Empire. Smolderen and Clerisse deliver a beautiful and contemporary tale, immersed in the fluid and aerodynamic imagery of 1950s sci-fi. Born in 1980, Alexandre Clérisse first got started in comics in 1999, fresh out of high school, by experimenting with a number of zines. In 2003 he began studying the craft in Angoulême, the French capital of comics. Recently, he has teamed up with scriptwriter Thierry Smolderen to produce two spectacular graphic novels, the otherworldly Atomic Empire (IDW, 2018) and the psychedelic Diabolical Summer (IDW, June 2019), both of which have won him some of the most prestigious comics awards across Europe. He also has an all ages seek and find book on cinema, Now Playing.
