Public Disa Blot (Disting or Charming of the Plough)

This Blot Honors the Disir ~ which are female ancestral guardian spirits Also called 'Charming of the Plough' after the Anglo-Saxon spell and ceremony. Recorded as a regular feast only in Sweden, this blessing takes place in early or mid-February. The name means 'Thing (assembly) of the Goddesses'. In Sweden, it was the first public moot/fair of the year; in Denmark, this is the time when the first furrows were ploughed in the field (an activity much hedged about with folk custom). This is a feast of new beginnings, at which the work of the year to come is blessed. this time, the Earth is prepared to have the seeds sown so that growth will take place in the land. Also, gifts may be given to the disir and elves at this time. [But the tide is really most holy to the goddess Freya. Freya is very pronounced in her erotic aspect at this time, and blessings designed to bring out this quality are right to do during this tide. The exact rule for determining the starting date of the Disting was given by Olof Rudbeck (1679: 68), professor in medicine at the university of Uppsala and a scholar with broad scientific interest: The moon that shines in the sky on Twelfth Day (6/1) is the Christmas moon and after this follows the DistingÂÂ's moon. This means that the earliest date for the beginning of the Disting was 21 January (7/1+14 days) and the latest date was 19 February (7/1+29 days). The Disting started on the day of the full moon between 21/1 and 19/2, according to the Julian calendar. The corresponding interval for the beginning of the Disting in our modern calendar is 28 January-26 February.
